<image:caption>Toro Vaun was born in 1977 in Cambodia during the height of power of the Khmer Rouge, headed by the communist dictator Pol Pot, which murdered nearly 2 million Cambodians during its five-year reign. Vaun spent most of his young life fleeing into the night with his family until finding relative safety in a refugee camp in Thailand. Finally, in 1992, Vaun and his family found passage to the U.S. and he never looked back. Vaun prospered over the years eventually settling down in the small West Texas town of Ballinger. But in the summer of 2011, after hearing of the death of his father, Vaun decided it was time to return to his homeland to discover what he had escaped, the unknowns he had left behind, the hidden strengths of his father and the resiliency of his homeland. <image:caption>Qualities of the spirit often save people from being defeated by the hard breaks in life, and the spirit of competition saved Chad McDuffee, an injured veteran of the Iraq War, from the darkness of anger and despair his wounds and battle experience brought down on him. The Ballinger native's participation in the Warrior Games, and soon after the Valor Games Midwest, revived his spirit, helped him keep depression and fear at bay, and put love and respect back in his family life. This is his story.   Caption: Chad and Jaslyn McDuffee share a ride on the Ferris Wheel on Chicago's Navy Pier. <image:caption>In the spring of 2011, portions of West Texas were suffering through one of the harshest droughts in recent memory. In combination with high temperatures and gusty winds, a small fire in Coke County on the Wildcat Mountain Ranch quickly became too much for local fire authorities to control and had to call in surrounding agencies for help. The Wildcat Fire quickly jumped from a 540-acre fire to a 42,000-acre fire in one day as it made its way across the open range. More than 200 fire and emergency agencies eventually assisted in the blaze that spread out across 159,308 acres, cost more than $2 million to contain and burned for 14 days. Caption: A U.S. Forest Service firefighter looks on as fires re-ignited during the day Monday due to the extreme dry weather and the high temperatures. <image:caption>Susan Cantu was born a fighter. Plagued with life-threatening ailments and failing kidneys at birth, Susan's father, Ernie, donated one of his kidneys so that she could live. The kidney lasted for about 10 years until it was time to find another donor. Miraculously, a donor was found through their church, Paul Ann Baptist in San Angelo. Her second kidney lasted another 10 years until a glitch in the MediCare system prevented Susan from getting the necessary anti-rejection drugs to keep the kidney functioning. Susan lost her second kidney and would have to undergo dialysis treatments for a year before another church member, Courtney Beach, was tested as a match and decided to donate a kidney. Susan's life can be seen as a rehearsal on a movie set. With the donation of a third kidney, this is Susan Cantu's life.. take three.
